The Meiji Restoration was a revolutionary reaction to the threat of Western colonization.  Sparked by Commodore Perry of the American Navy's arrival in 1853,  Emperor Meiji rapidly reformed Japan's (social, political, economic, and military) institutions.  Turning a closed feudal country into a modern world power in just 40 years.
